Buh-bye, China Study

I’d heard of the China Study which supposedly proves veganism is healthier than eating animal foods. But I hadn’t read the book, so really couldn’t have an opinion about it. I’d heard from some LC bloggers that it was bunk, but again, nothing definite.

That all changed today. I think it’s time for T. [...]

Occasionally some media outlet is fair…

Someone on my Facebook feed linked to this article at the L.A. Times about those ridiculous new USDA nutrition guidelines:

A low-carb guru weighs in on the dietary guidelines

…Actually, calling Dr. Phinney a “guru” is kind of stretching it. I never even heard of the dude until the buzz started about the new [...]

Much ado about lard

Ever had someone tell you to avoid lard because it’s bad for you? If you’re like me, you’ve been told over and over again that lard’s bad because it’s saturated fat.

A few years ago, I actually bought a tub of the stuff and tried cooking with it. It’s difficult to find the non-hydrogenated [...]

The pitfalls of calorie theory

I’m WILFing* around again in the LC and paleo blogospheres and ran across this guy, who overall is interesting, but I’m kind of freaking out at his recipes… too high on the protein and too low on the fat. Anyway, he’s got a piece up about how to get fat and how to lose weight. I was about to argue with him there, then I remembered I have a blog. I like you dude, and you have a nice blog, so this is not a vendetta. And I don’t expect people to take me seriously, since I’m still fat. Nevertheless.

I tell people that calories don’t count as one of my rhetorical shortcuts. It is not that I’m lying, it’s that if I stood around trying to explain to them how the whole thing works, most of them’s eyes would glaze over and they’d tune me out about three paragraphs in. Because I know how they think of calorie theory, how they believe the theory works, I shortcut “the way you believe about calorie theory is incorrect” to say “calories don’t count,” because in the way THESE PEOPLE think calories count, they don’t, as far as the evidence indicates.

I see you’re confused. I’ll try to clear it up.

Is slow weight loss really healthier?

Fortuitously, I was at Girl Gone Primal‘s blog a few minutes ago and happened across an interesting link in her RSS feed. A Dr. Briffa has written the following in his blog entry, For weight loss, does ‘slow and steady’ really win the day?…

…more rapid weight loss initially was associated with better [...]

Why do fat people blog?

Wow, I can’t even look happy when I’m modeling*. Fail…

Today I was reminded of a trend I’ve seen in health blogging generally. It annoys me a lot. I don’t know why I haven’t written much about it here up til now. So now I will devote an entire blog post to the subject. Lucky you!

Wednesday weigh-in: 244.5

248.5 | 244.5 | 140

My apologies for two things:

1. The color of the light. I meant to put the camera on “auto” and I had it on Aperture Priority instead, which is halfway manual, so a white-balance setting I’d set previously was still in force, but I was under different lights. [...]

Saturday Snark, Sunday edition

I have skipped this probably two weeks in a row and I’m sick of it. I’m so sick of it that although I’m writing this at 13 minutes past midnight, let’s pretend I’m actually writing it on Sunday, so I’m totally lying with the datestamp. Yes, I’m that OCD. Fuck it. Let’s roll.

I was going to take a photo of a lacto-paleo cheesecake I made “tonight” in honor of my child’s sperm donor’s recent birthday, but he cut into it before I could yell HangOnASecLemmeGetTheFuckinCamera. So you get kitties again instead, because I like pictures to go with my LinkWithin plugin. This is my cat Lundi getting mommy hugs. She likes to get up on the bathroom sink and then prop her paws on my chest and purr like crazy while I pet her.

OK, there’s the cute part, on with the bitching.
